UK Has Worse Mobile Internet Than Every EU and G7 Country

Britain’s mobile internet speeds have fallen behind Kazakhstan, Cambodia and Romania. The UK continues to struggle with poor mobile signals, slow downloads and unreliable connections despite widespread 4G coverage.

According to The Telegraph, users often face stalled applications and long loading times. Meanwhile, network upgrades continue to face planning delays and disputes.

UK Falls Behind in Mobile Network Performance

A separate analysis by consumer group Which? found that the UK had worse mobile internet coverage than every country in the European Union and G7.

Britain ranked 57th globally for overall mobile network performance.

It also placed 70th for download speeds and 55th for connection consistency.

These issues affect video calls, streaming, online gaming and mobile payments.

Moreover, more than one-third of UK customers reported experiencing a mobile service problem during the previous 12 months.

96% 4G Coverage Does Not Mean Reliable Service

Ofcom says at least one mobile operator provides predicted 4G coverage across 96% of the UK’s landmass.

However, this figure does not mean every customer can access a reliable 4G signal.

Only 84% of the country has predicted good 4G coverage from all mobile network operators.

Meanwhile, combined 5G coverage from every operator reaches only 64% of the UK.

Coverage data also does not fully reflect network congestion, indoor reception or service quality during busy hours.

As a result, phones may show a 4G or 5G symbol while websites and applications still fail to load.

Mobile Users Struggle While Travelling

A YouGov survey found that more than four in 10 people struggled to access 4G or 5G for at least half the time they were travelling.

Around 45% of users experienced mobile connectivity problems outside their homes at least once a week.

The figure increased to 57% among people aged between 18 and 24.

Britain’s global mobile speed ranking has also declined in recent years.

The country previously fell to 59th place for mobile download speeds, down from 53rd in 2024 and 51st in 2023.

Planning Delays Are Slowing Network Expansion

Mobile operators need more towers and upgraded equipment to improve network capacity.

However, planning objections and disputes with landowners often delay new infrastructure projects.

Large cities also face heavy network congestion because too many users connect to the same towers.

At the same time, rural areas receive less investment because building infrastructure costs more and serves fewer customers.

Mobile coverage on Britain’s railway network remains another major weakness.

Germany, by comparison, has introduced minimum mobile download speed requirements on major railway routes.

Cheap Mobile Plans Offer Limited Value

The UK offers relatively affordable mobile packages compared with several other developed economies.

However, low prices offer little value when customers cannot make calls or access mobile data reliably.

The latest findings show a growing gap between Britain’s digital ambitions and the real experience of mobile users.

Without faster planning approvals, greater investment and more network capacity, the UK risks falling further behind smaller and less wealthy countries.
