The Lahore Traffic Police has proposed new operating hours for heavy traffic, recommending that waste management vehicles be allowed on the city’s major roads only between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. to improve road safety and reduce congestion.
The recommendation was made by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Raheem in a formal letter sent to the Suthra Punjab Authority following a series of fatal accidents involving heavy waste management vehicles operating under the Suthra Punjab Program and the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC).
According to the traffic police, four accidents involving Suthra Punjab and LWMC vehicles during 2025-26 resulted in the deaths of 10 people. In response, the CTO has also recommended restricting the movement of heavy waste management vehicles on the city’s busiest roads during peak traffic hours.
The proposed timing of 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. is intended to allow cleaning operations to continue while minimizing the risk of accidents and preventing disruptions to daytime traffic.
In addition to the revised operating hours, the traffic police has called for stricter monitoring of heavy vehicle drivers, mandatory road safety training, and stronger legal action against those found guilty of negligence.
Separately, the Lahore Traffic Police has suspended the driving licenses of 68 drivers involved in traffic accidents on the instructions of the CTO.
Officials said the license of any driver involved in a fatal or serious non-fatal accident will be suspended immediately. Anyone caught driving with a suspended license will face legal action, including the registration of a criminal case.
CTO Syed Abdul Raheem said drivers responsible for reckless driving will have their licenses suspended for at least one year, while those involved in fatal accidents will also face additional legal proceedings. He added that the department will continue strict enforcement of traffic laws to improve road safety across Lahore.
