Iran has reacted sharply to the death of US Senator Lindsey Graham, describing him as a “malicious” figure and saying the Iranian people have no reason to mourn his passing.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Graham’s political philosophy was based on “aggression and intimidation”, reported Al Jazeera.
He said the senator maintained a hostile approach toward Iran and supported the recent US-Israel military campaign against the country.
“Our people will not mourn a man whose philosophy on life was aggression and intimidation,” Baghaei said. He added that Graham’s “entire being was malicious” and also described him as “hot-tempered.”
The comments came a day after reports emerged that Graham had died suddenly at the age of 71. Iranian state television also aired broadcasts in which several anchors welcomed news of his death.
Graham had long been one of the most vicious advocates in the US Senate for a tougher policy toward Iran and was a vocal supporter of US-Israel security cooperation.
