A Brazilian gamer has won a court order requiring Microsoft to restore his suspended account and the digital Xbox games connected to it.
The player, known online as Ordo_Liberal, sued Microsoft after the company permanently suspended his account following a reported incident of unauthorized access. Microsoft support allegedly told him that it could not recover the account and that he would need to create a new one and repurchase his games.
The dispute began around three months ago when the gamer reported that someone had gained unauthorized access to his Microsoft account.
Microsoft investigated the incident and said changes had been made to the account’s security information. The company then permanently suspended the account to prevent further use, according to support messages shared by the gamer.
The user said he had enabled two-factor authentication but was still unable to recover the account through Microsoft’s available support options.
The suspension also blocked access to the digital games he had purchased through the account. Rather than starting again and rebuilding his library, he filed a consumer case against Microsoft in Brazil.
The Brazilian court gave Microsoft 15 days to restore access to the gamer’s account and digital library.
Microsoft will face a daily penalty of 150 Brazilian reais, or around $30, if it fails to follow the order. The penalties can reach a maximum of 1,500 reais, which is roughly $300.
The court also ordered Microsoft to pay the gamer 2,000 reais, equivalent to approximately $400, in compensation.
The gamer said he pursued the case through Brazil’s consumer-protection and small-claims system.
This allowed him to take legal action without paying court fees or hiring a private lawyer. He said he received access to public legal assistance during the case.
The compensation is relatively small compared with major class-action lawsuits. However, the court’s order to return the account and purchased games is the most important part of the ruling.
The case highlights concerns about digital ownership as Microsoft, Sony, and other gaming companies increasingly move away from physical discs.
Digital games are normally sold under licences connected to user accounts. Losing access to an account can therefore remove access to an entire collection, even when the customer previously paid for every game.
A Microsoft account can also contain Windows licences, Microsoft 365 subscriptions, applications, OneDrive files, and other purchases. A permanent account suspension may affect far more than just an Xbox library.
However, this was a first-instance ruling involving one customer in Brazil. It does not automatically establish a binding precedent for other gamers, jurisdictions, or future disputes, and Microsoft may still have legal options to challenge it.
Microsoft had not publicly commented on the ruling at the time of reporting.
