MNAs Fear Telenor-Ufone Merger Could Worsen Mobile Services

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology on  Tuesdayexpressed concern that the merger of Telenor Pakistan and Ufone could worsen service quality unless network performance improves.

Lawmakers also criticized operators for poor network quality and unreliable mobile services.

Committee Chairman Syed Amin Ul Haque said Ufone’s service had become extremely poor, while committee member Rana Iradat Sharif warned that Telenor users could also face deteriorating service following the merger.

The committee summoned officials of Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), the operator of Ufone, to appear at its next meeting and explain the company’s plans to improve service quality.

PTA also acknowledged that it was not claiming any improvement in quality of service, although it expects network performance to improve over time as 5G is rolled out.

The committee also urged the PTA to take stronger regulatory action against operators that fail to meet quality standards.

  • The PTA should create legislation to ensure minimum service threshold for all companies and then monitor and impose heavy fines to those not meeting those thresholds!!
