Govt Likely to Announce Biggest Ever Increase in Blood Money

The federal government is likely to notify the value of Diyat (compensation in lieu of life) at Rs. 19.3 million for the fiscal year 2026-27, the biggest jump in the country’s history.

Sources told ProPakistani that the Finance Division has proposed to the federal cabinet that the value of Diyat be fixed at Rs. 19.3 million for the fiscal year 2026-27, compared to Rs. 9,828,670 in FY26.

The amount is based on the value of 30,630 grams of silver, which is the quantity prescribed under Section 323(2) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The value of Diyat is revised annually based on the market price of silver and is payable to the legal heirs of a victim.

For the current fiscal year, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has proposed a significantly higher Diyat amount due to the sharp increase in silver prices.

Once approved, the revised amount will be binding on courts and all relevant institutions dealing with Diyat cases during the fiscal year 2026-27.

Sources said the Finance Division will issue an official notification after the federal cabinet approves the proposed amount.
