OpenAI’s Second Hardware Launch is ChatGPT Basketball

OpenAI’s first major hardware push this week was not limited to a $230 mini keyboard for Codex users. The company also quietly listed a ChatGPT Basketball on its official Supply Co. store.

The basketball costs $70 and is part of OpenAI’s “Pause. Play. Prompt.” campaign. OpenAI describes it as a physical reminder that creativity does not only live on screens. The product is already listed as out of stock on the company’s store.

A ChatGPT Basketball Exists

The ChatGPT Basketball is a standard Size 7 ball measuring 29.5 inches.

It is made from 100 percent rubber, which makes it more suitable for outdoor play than premium leather basketballs used on professional courts. OpenAI has not shared any wider campaign details beyond the product listing.

The launch is unusual, but it fits OpenAI’s growing Supply Co. store, where the company sells official merchandise, apparel, accessories, and limited-edition collectibles.

Codex Micro Was the Main Hardware Launch

The bigger product launch was Codex Micro, a $230 mini keyboard designed with Work Louder.

OpenAI calls the device a “command center for agentic work.” It is built for users who manage Codex agents and want physical controls for common AI coding actions.

The device includes light-up Agent Keys that show whether an AI agent is thinking, running, waiting, or finished. It also has command keys for frequent actions, a joystick for launching workflows, and a dial for adjusting the reasoning level used by Codex.

Codex Micro supports Bluetooth and USB-C, works with Mac and Windows, and includes mechanical switches, RGB lighting, a rotary encoder, a touch sensor, and a planar joystick.

OpenAI Is Selling More Than AI Tools

OpenAI’s store also includes several branded items beyond the basketball and Codex Micro.

The Supply Co. shop lists items such as a Good Research Tee for $40, a Codex Build Hoodie for $100, a ChatGPT Longsleeve for $50, and a Research Half Zip for $175.

OpenAI says Supply Co. began as internal employee merchandise before turning into a broader public store. The company describes these products as physical expressions of its research culture.

A Strange But Memorable Launch

The basketball is clearly not a major hardware product like Codex Micro.

Instead, it looks more like a branding experiment or collector item tied to OpenAI’s new merchandise push. Still, its timing makes it stand out. OpenAI is entering physical products with a keyboard for AI coding agents, while also selling a ball that tells users creativity can happen away from screens.

For a company known for chatbots, coding agents, and generative AI, a ChatGPT basketball is an unexpected first step onto the court.
