Czech Mountaineer Dies While Climbing One of Pakistan’s Most Challenging Peaks

A Czech mountaineer has died after falling during an attempt to climb Masherbrum (K1), one of the most challenging and least-climbed peaks in Pakistan’s Karakoram Range.

The climber, Bansky Jaroslav, was part of a foreign expedition attempting to summit the 7,821-meter mountain when he fell from a cliff near Camp 1 on Thursday, according to sources at the base camp.

DIG Baltistan Tufail Ahmed Mir confirmed the incident, saying the accident occurred while members of the expedition were ascending the peak. A source at the base camp said Jaroslav’s family had arrived in Islamabad. Authorities have yet to decide whether his body will be recovered from the mountain and brought to Skardu.

Masherbrum is widely regarded as one of the Karakoram’s most technically demanding peaks. Jaroslav’s team was the first expedition to attempt the mountain in nearly five decades.

His death is the second climbing fatality reported in Gilgit-Baltistan during this year’s summer mountaineering season. On June 22, French climber Guillaume Pierrel was killed in an avalanche while attempting to scale the 7,282-meter K6 peak in Ghanche district.

Despite the recent tragedies, Pakistan’s summer climbing season remains active, with hundreds of foreign climbers attempting to summit some of the world’s highest mountains.
