PEMRA Gives TV Channels Just 3 Days to Submit Cybersecurity Roadmap

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has directed all satellite television channel licensees to submit a detailed cybersecurity implementation roadmap within three working days and complete key cybersecurity measures by August 4, amid growing concerns over satellite uplink interference and cyber threats targeting Pakistan’s broadcast sector.

According to an official notification, television channels have been asked to provide timelines for third party cybersecurity audits, the installation or outsourcing of Security Operations Centers (SOC) and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems, and the appointment of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs). PEMRA said all measures must be completed by the August 4 deadline.

The regulator has also convened a meeting on July 8 at its Islamabad headquarters to discuss satellite uplink frequency interference.

Television channels have been directed to ensure the attendance of their Chief Technical Officers and Chief Cyber Security Officers, while SUPARCO and Paksat International Limited have been asked to nominate technical experts to help address what PEMRA described as a matter of grave concern.

The latest directives follow a cybersecurity meeting held on June 30, where officials from the National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) briefed broadcasters on cybersecurity protocols, risk mitigation strategies, and best practices for protecting broadcast infrastructure and digital platforms.

The government’s push to strengthen cybersecurity comes after coordinated cyberattacks in March 2026 targeted several major television channels, including Geo News, ARY News, and Samaa TV.

The attacks reportedly disrupted live broadcasts and defaced websites with pro Israel and Mossad related messages, prompting investigations by the National Computer Emergency Response Team (PKCERT) and the formation of a government committee to strengthen cybersecurity standards across Pakistan’s broadcast industry.
