Samsung Display has started supplying a new tandem OLED panel for premium laptops with support for VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification.
The new certification is VESA’s highest DisplayHDR True Black tier so far. Samsung says its new laptop panel can reach up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness at the panel level, while the VESA True Black 1400 standard requires at least 1,400 nits peak brightness.
VESA introduced DisplayHDR True Black 1400 earlier this month for next-generation OLED displays aimed at professional HDR content creation and premium HDR viewing.
The certification requires OLED displays to maintain black levels as low as 0.0005 nits while reaching at least 1,400 nits peak brightness. It also raises full-screen luminance to at least 700 nits, representing a major step up in OLED HDR performance.
Samsung Display says the new tier raises the peak brightness requirement by 40 percent compared with DisplayHDR True Black 1000, which was previously the highest tier.
Samsung achieved the higher brightness through a tandem OLED design.
The panel stacks two organic emissive layers, allowing both layers to emit light together. This helps the display reach higher brightness levels while reducing the load on each layer at normal laptop brightness.
Samsung says the panel offers more than double the lifespan of a conventional single-stack OLED panel under typical laptop operating brightness conditions.
The company also used newly developed organic emissive materials to improve brightness, efficiency, stability, and long-term durability.
The first laptop using the new panel is the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition 16-inch, Gen 11.
Samsung Display says the Lenovo laptop earned VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification on July 8. Lenovo’s listing describes the machine with a 16-inch 3.2K Pro Tandem OLED touchscreen, 120Hz variable refresh rate, 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness, and full coverage of sRGB, P3, and Adobe RGB color spaces.
The laptop can be configured with Intel Core Ultra 7 356H or Core Ultra 9 386H processors, along with Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050 or RTX 5060 laptop graphics. Lenovo also lists a 92.5Wh battery and a chassis as thin as 17.2mm.
Samsung Display says it is already supplying tandem OLED panels to multiple global PC manufacturers.
Asus, Dell Technologies, and MSI are expected to launch laptops supporting DisplayHDR True Black 1400 from the second half of this year through next year.
Samsung will also showcase the new panel at K-Display 2026, which will take place at COEX in Seoul from July 22 to July 24. The panel will be shown in Samsung Display’s “Ultimate Performance Showcase” zone.
OLED laptop displays already offer deep blacks and high contrast, but brightness and long-term durability have remained important concerns.
Samsung’s tandem OLED panel directly targets both issues. It pushes HDR brightness higher while reducing stress on the emissive layers during normal use.
That should make the technology more attractive for premium laptops aimed at creators, video editors, gamers, and users who want stronger HDR performance on portable screens.
