Sony has launched the FX5, the latest model in its compact cinema camera lineup.
The new camera sits above the FX3, which remains on sale. It brings a new sensor, updated processor, open gate recording, internal RAW recording, and several workflow improvements for video creators.
Open Gate Recording
The biggest new feature is open gate recording.
This allows the FX5 to use the full width and height of the sensor to capture 3:2 video. It gives users more flexibility in post-production, especially when creating vertical crops from the same footage.
This is useful for creators who need one recording for multiple formats, including standard horizontal video and vertical social media clips.
New Sensor and Processor
The Sony FX5 features a new 16.6MP full-frame fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor.
It is paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor, which includes built-in AI processing. The camera can currently record up to 5K at 60fps and 4K at 120fps.
Sony will also add 5K at 120 fps and 4K at 240 fps via a future firmware update.
Internal RAW Recording
The FX5 also supports 16-bit linear RAW recording internally.
This means users can record the full 3:2 sensor output in 5K at 60fps directly inside the camera without needing an external recorder. Sony will add 120fps support later through firmware.
The camera uses Sony’s professional X-OCN format, with LT, C1, and C2 codec options. These offer different compression levels for more efficient recording.
Dynamic Range and ISO
The FX5 is the first Sony FX camera to get Dual Gain Shooting.
This function combines output from low and high gain values to improve dynamic range and reduce noise.
The camera also has three base ISO settings: ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800. Sony says the FX5 offers more than 15 stops of dynamic range.
Autofocus and Shooting Tools
The FX5 includes AI-based human pose estimation for autofocus.
It also supports Auto Tracing White Balance, which uses visible and infrared sensor data to adjust white balance more accurately.
Sony has also added the option to disable in-camera noise reduction. This gives users more control when editing footage later.
The camera also includes a de-squeeze function for anamorphic lenses, though using this mode disables autofocus.
Body and Controls
The FX5 has a larger 3.5-inch touchscreen with 2.76 million dots and full articulation.
It also includes a built-in cooling fan, a larger NP-SA100 battery, dual USB ports for power and data, a wired LAN port, and a new menu system based on Sony’s CineAlta cameras.
The camera does not include a built-in viewfinder. Sony has introduced the DVF-EL1 detachable viewfinder as an optional accessory.
Sony is also offering an XLR-H2 handle for users who need professional audio input.
Price and Availability
The Sony FX5 is priced at $4,900 for the body-only version. The version bundled with the XLR-H2 handle costs $5,500.
The camera will go on sale in mid-August.
