Microsoft has started testing an ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming that allows selected users to stream games they own without paying for a Game Pass subscription.
The test began on July 23 and is currently limited to members of the Xbox Insider programme with an Xbox account. Microsoft has not announced when or whether it will become available to all players.
Ads Will Play Before Gaming Sessions
Players participating in the test can stream supported games from their existing digital libraries for free.
Each gaming session is limited to one hour. Advertisements will appear before the session begins but will not interrupt players during gameplay. Participation is optional, and users can continue using other paid or non-ad-supported ways to play.
Microsoft has not disclosed how long the advertisements will run or whether it will introduce daily or monthly playing limits.
The company also did not promise that every digitally purchased Xbox game would qualify. Its announcement refers only to selected games that users own and that support cloud streaming.
Available Across Supported Cloud Gaming Devices
Xbox Cloud Gaming currently works on supported PCs, Xbox consoles, smartphones, tablets, selected LG and Samsung televisions, Amazon Fire TV devices and selected Meta Quest headsets.
Users can also access the service through supported web browsers on Android, iPhone, iPad and computers. A compatible controller is generally required, although some games support touchscreen controls.
The free test could also allow Xbox One owners to stream newer games developed for the Xbox Series X and Series S without immediately buying newer hardware.
Microsoft Sets Rules for Advertising
Microsoft said its advertisements must provide value without interrupting gameplay.
The company also said ads should meet the same quality standards as its gaming content, be clearly identified as advertising and match what users expect on each platform.
Microsoft will use feedback from Xbox Insiders to adjust the service before deciding how to expand it.
Xbox Looks for More Affordable Ways to Reach Players
The test comes as Microsoft looks for less expensive ways to attract new players and make Xbox games available without requiring console ownership.
Xbox console prices are also scheduled to increase worldwide from August 1. Microsoft blamed the increases partly on sharply rising storage and memory costs.
Microsoft believes an ad-supported cloud option could reduce the initial cost of accessing games while giving developers an opportunity to reach more users.
However, the company has not confirmed the final launch date, full game catalogue, advertisement length or whether the one-hour session limit will remain after testing.
