14 Cities Compete to Host ICC T20 World Cup 2028

Fourteen cities across Australia and New Zealand have expressed interest in hosting matches during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, with organizers expected to shortlist between eight and 10 venues for the tournament.

Australia and New Zealand will jointly host the competition, which is scheduled to take place from mid-October to mid-November 2028.

Tournament organizers invited bids from potential host cities and venues across both countries and received proposals from 14 cities. However, only eight to 10 cities are expected to be selected, meaning up to six applicants could miss out on hosting matches.

The proposals will be assessed in accordance with ICC venue requirements, with an independent evaluation committee assisting organizers in reviewing the bids. The final list of host cities is expected to be announced by the end of 2026, with reports suggesting that a decision could be made around mid-October.

Organizers are aiming to balance representation across both countries with operational efficiency. The ICC reportedly prefers a more concentrated tournament footprint rather than spreading matches across too many locations.

Limiting the number of host cities would simplify logistics, scheduling, and tournament management across Australia and New Zealand. It would also reduce travel for participating teams and supporters.

According to reports, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is the leading candidate to host the final because of its capacity and history of staging major cricket events. However, the final venue has not yet been officially confirmed.
