Tandoors in Punjab have warned of shutting down business after failing to reach an agreement with the administration over roti prices.
The Mutahida Nan Roti Association said it is consulting on suspending roti sales or closing tandoors completely. It also said it may stop selling plain roti and limit sales to naan and khameeri roti only.
Nanbais said the administration is forcing them to sell roti at Rs14, which they claim is not enough to cover costs. They demanded that the official price of roti be raised to Rs25.
Association officials said gas, flour and rent have become much more expensive, making it impossible to continue business at the current rate. They argued that even selling a 100-gram roti at Rs14 does not cover expenses.
They warned that if the official rate is not revised, they will have no choice but to shut down their businesses.
