Traffic Police Crack Down on ‘Applied For’ Number Plates

The City Traffic Police Lahore have intensified their crackdown on motorists using fake or tampered number plates to evade the e-challan system, registering cases against 88 motorcycle and luxury vehicle owners over the past two months.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore said the police issued 15,974 challan tickets to vehicles and motorcycles operating without number plates or displaying “Applied For” plates.

The traffic police also took action against 9,382 vehicles and motorcycles for using fancy number plates or plates that did not meet the Excise Department’s prescribed design. In addition, officers issued 9,218 challans to motorists for bending, damaging, obscuring, or altering their number plates.

During the special enforcement campaign, the traffic police also educated more than 50,000 vehicle and motorcycle owners about traffic laws and the legal requirements for displaying number plates.

The CTO said authorities are imposing fines ranging from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 5,000 on car owners and Rs. 1,000 on motorcycle riders for tampering with number plates. Police are also registering fraud cases against motorists using fake number plates.

The CTO urged citizens to use their new universal registration number after transferring vehicle ownership instead of displaying the previous registration number. He added that criminals often use fake or altered number plates to conceal their identity, and the police will continue taking strict action against such offenders.
