In response to the growing population and rising crime rate, authorities in Punjab are planning to establish 80 new police stations across the province, including in Lahore.
According to official sources, the Home Department has raised objections to the initial proposal and returned the summary for revisions. The plan had included the division of some existing police stations to create new ones, alongside the establishment of additional stations in other districts.
Currently, Punjab has 727 police stations, and the proposed expansion would raise the total to 807. Of the 80 new stations, one was to be created by splitting an existing unit, while 79 new stations were to be set up in different parts of the province.
However, after the summary was sent back, officials are now expected to reframe the proposal under the term “police posts” rather than full-fledged stations. The revised summary will be submitted to the government after it receives approval from the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police.
The plan aims to improve law enforcement coverage and capacity amid the province’s expanding urban and rural populations.
