History of Spring Rolls:

Historians mention that the first-ever variant of spring roll was cooked during the Jin Dynasty. They’d call it spring dish. People used to make thin cakes made of flour and ate them with fruits and vegetables at the beginning of spring as a welcome dish. People even gifted their relatives spring rolls and it was considered one of the best gifts at the time. Later, with the passage of time, the dish evolved and people started calling them spring cakes.

Two dynasties later, the dish wasn’t confined to the rich only but was eaten by the rich and poor both. Everyone had their takes on the recipe and this further evolved spring rolls. The poor could only afford celery and carrots so they added these two ingredients to their rolls. The rich added beans, vermicelli, sauces, dried and fried fruits, eggs, beansprouts, and spinach, etc.

Chinese vs. Vietnamese Spring Roll:

Chinese spring rolls are often filled with vegetables where Vietnamese spring rolls are often filled with rice, noodles along minced meat. Typically, you’ll find Vietnamese spring rolls filled with shrimp, vegetables, herbs, and rice vermicelli.
