The Paleolithic diet also normally known as the Paleo diet functions on the idea that all 21st-century health concerns can be minimized by eating food that was available in the Paleolithic era. This dates back 2 million years ago.

This diet is specially designed to resemble the food choices made by human hunter-gatherers thousands of years ago. When it comes to collecting information that is millions of years old, it is rather difficult to accurately state the composition of the diet. But, several researchers believe that diet consisted of mainly whole foods.

MEAL PLAN:

When it comes to diet, there is no right or wrong way of eating. What may be suitable for one individual might not work for others. In the Paleolithic era, humans were living on different food items according to the availability of food and their convenience. Some relied on a low-carb diet that was attained by feasting on animals. Others relied on a low protein diet i.e., plants.

If you decide to proceed with the paleo diet, I want to lay out some of the food options available and some of the options that should be avoided.

Available food options:

Meat, fish, vegetables, eggs, fruits, herbs, nuts, seeds, healthy oils, fats, and spices, etc.

Food you shouldn’t consume:

Soft drinks, sugar, processed food, some dairy products, artificial sweeteners, trans-fat, margarine, vegetable oil, legumes, etc.

EXCEPTIONAL FOOD ITEMS THAT MAKE THE CUT:

Some foods and beverages are fine as long as you are having them in small quantities. They include:

1. Dark Chocolate:

I know it’s hard to cut out chocolate from your diet; the most amazing creation of mankind. You can have chocolate as long as the cocoa concentration is more than 70%. Dark chocolate is extremely healthy and nutritious.

2. Tea:

Again, expecting Pakistanis to cut out tea from their lives is like expecting people to stop gossiping. Impossible, right? Don’t worry, tea is very healthy for you, especially green tea. Tea has a bunch of health benefits and is very rich in antioxidants.

3. Coffee:

Coffee also has a lot of benefits. It is also very rich in antioxidants so coffee can also be devoured if you have a hard time going about your day without coffee.

SAMPLE MEAL FOR A DAY

Breakfast: Vegetables and eggs fried in coconut oil. You can also include a piece of fruit.

Lunch: Handful of nuts. You can also make a sandwich out of lettuce leaf filled with chicken

Dinner: Baked fish with avocadoes and veggies.

Although this diet isn’t as religiously followed as compared to other diets, it still has numerous benefits that can’t be overlooked. While you are at it, you can also throw in a bunch of healthy food items including gluten-free grains and grass-fed-butter. This diet may help you lose or maintain weight. Following this diet doesn’t change the fact that omission of certain food items can lead to suboptimal intake of important nutrients.
