Following the launch of Maulana Tariq Jameel’s clothing line MTJ, news emerged that the brand is selling overpriced drawstrings, commonly called ‘nara’.

Once again MTJ garnered backlash as people ridiculed the brand for overpricing a basic article like a drawstring. Now the fashion brand is clearing the air that they don’t even sell drawstrings/nara. Earlier, it was rumored that the ‘Islamic fashion brand’ is selling a single nara for Rs. 550/- a piece.

The announcement was made on the MTJ official Instagram page.

Since its launch, the ‘Islamic fashion brand’ has been subjected to much criticism. From questioning why is ‘Maulana’ a part of the brand’s label, to why a religious cleric has a fashion label.

That hype died down somewhat after the Islamic scholar explained that he established his own clothing line for a stable income to sustain his welfare foundation and chain of madrassahs that currently run on donations.

There was also much criticism towards the extravagant launch of the apparel brand. The neglect for COVID-19 SOPs only added to the public disdain.

However, the launch of the first MTJ flagship store on Tariq Road, Karachi was also met with backlash over non-compliance with coronavirus SOPs.

From the mass gathering outside the store to the lack of handwashing facilities outside. MTJ Managing Director, Younus Moten wasn’t even wearing a mask, as seen in videos of the launch.
