It’s that time of year again, International Women’s Day. When we gather to rally support for women empowerment and emancipation worldwide. This year, let’s appreciate Pakistani women that have landed the country on the global map.
While there are numerous extraordinary women making the nation proud we only complied a list of 5 of them. The reason is that they landed Pakistan on the global map. While some of them identify are purely Pakistani women through and through, others have a more diverse identity.
Malala Yousafzai
Naturally, we had to mention Pakistan’s second Nobel Prize winner. The youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate is now an active education advocate, particularly for women’s education.
Fatima Bhutto
Another global leader, who is not only about issues in Pakistan but across the world. We often see the Pakistani-American public figure speaking on world affairs at global forums. Aside from that, she’s also an accomplished author.
Laraib Atta
Another young Pakistani woman is making us proud. This digital artist made headlines for her remarkable work in Hollywood. This year she has even been nominated for an Academy Award for her work on the James Bond film No Time To Die. She’s the daughter of revered folk singer Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi.
Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy
Another star in the entertainment industry, the two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker has garnered widespread praise and recognition for her documentaries and now educational animated series. Now she’s set to work as one of four directors helming Disney’s Ms. Marvel series.
Kamila Shamsie
Pakistani-British writer and novelist has garnered more than praise for her work. Kamila Shamsie has received several international honors and accolades and was last shortlisted for the Dublin Literary Awards in 2019.
Misha Japanwala
This Pakistani artist made headlines for her collaboration with American rapper Cardi B. Misha designing a custom-made pregnancy mold for the globally famed hip-hop artist. She also collaborated with Gigi Hadid on a sculptural mask for a special issue of V Magazine that the supermodel guest-edited.
