In a heartfelt and lengthy statement on Instagram, Gigi Hadid addressed the violence in Palestine, referring to it as an “unjustifiable tragedy.”
Gigi, whose father is of Palestinian heritage, has consistently shown her support for the Palestinian cause but wanted to make it clear that her support does not extend to violence.
In her statement, she wrote,
While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person.
She expressed her profound concerns for all individuals impacted by the tragedy, with a particular focus on the children who are suffering the most.
Gigi Hadid stressed the importance of not terrorizing innocent people and explained that such actions are not in alignment with the goals of the “Free Palestine” movement. She expressed her belief that violence has led to a painful cycle of retaliation, with innocent civilians on both sides caught in the crossfire.
Furthermore, she asserted that associating being pro-Palestine with anti-Semitism perpetuates a false idea.
In her message, the supermodel offered her condolences to anyone who is hurting, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and respecting the basic rights, treatment, and security of all individuals, regardless of their nationality, religion, ethnicity, or place of birth.
The recent escalation of violence in Palestine began following Hamas’s significant assault on Israel, marked by the firing of a barrage of rockets from Gaza and incursions across the border. In response, Israel launched its own strikes in Gaza, targeting public buildings and hospitals that led to countless deaths of innocent civilians, including children.
Gigi Hadid and her model sister, Bella, have been vocal proponents of the pro-Palestine movement. However, Bella faced backlash for her activism in May 2021, with some suggesting external pressure was behind her apparent shift to neutrality on social media following her participation in protests.
