A Classic Mozart Symphony Gets the Desi Treatment in Viral Video

This is amazing.

Mozart's Symphony No. 40

A Kolkata-based Bengali girl took the Internet by storm with her desi rendition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 or ‘The Great G Minor Symphony‘.

The 22-year-old fused the ‘seven sargams’ of Indian classical music with Mozart’s famed Symphony No. 40.

Samadipta Mukherjee’s viral video even garnered praise from legendary songstress Lata Mangeshkar.

She actually drew inspiration for this from Salil Chaudhury’s composition in filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film, Chhaya (1961).

Coincidentally a Bengali composer, Salil Chaudhury took portions of the first movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and paired it with Indian tunes in the song – Itna na mujhse tu pyaar badhaa, ke main ik baadal awaara – with actors Asha Parekh and Sunil Dutt in the frame.

About Samdipta

Samadipta went ahead and created her own desi cover of Symphony No. 40. She is often seen sharing covers and songs on her Facebook page.

TredoNews reported that she is pursuing her Masters in Music from the University of Calcutta. Samadipta began learning music at the age of four from her uncle Swarajit Guha Roy. She was then under the mentorship of Pt Kalyan Chattopadhyay and is now undergoing training with Subhamita Bandopadhyay.

Her interest in western classical music was brought on by a workshop by popular Bengali composer, Debojyoti Mishra.

“He is the master who sowed the seed within me. He would tell me to listen to the works of Mozart and Beethoven, which I did.”
