The Pakistan Muslim League – Noon (PML-N) government continues to struggle managing the country’s economic crisis. From their “unfair” ousting of Prime Minister Imran Khan to spiking the gas prices, the so-called “imported government” is under intense public scrutiny.
Last month, the federal cabinet banned over 41 imported items for two months to forestall the looming default. While people are trying to go about their lives with the gas prices and banning of imported products, the government struck a nerve with the masses asking them to “drink less chai!”
Every Pakistani and their children know that “chai is life”. Tea is an essential part of every Pakistani’s life, asking them to restrict their chai consumption is risky business.
Recently, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, told the masses to reduce their consumption of tea. According to Ahsan Iqbal, this “initiative is meant to help the government curtail the import bill.
“I appeal to the nation to reduce tea intake by one or two cups daily because we borrow money for tea import as well,” he said while speaking to the media in Islamabad on Tuesday.
The statement went viral on social media as the Pakistani awaam felt outraged. Chai united netizens all over social media as they took to Twitter to call out Ahsan Iqbal for this ‘unjustified demand’.
