Ms Marvel

As the desi community raves about the Disney plus series Ms. Marvel. The live adaptation of the comic series by the same name is also raising the reality of racism. How? Given the review bombing on IMDb.

The series, centered around a Pakistani-American Muslim superhero, is facing discrimination over the titular character’s race and religion.

Despite being the most-watched Disney series in recent days, the best-reviewed MCU series on Disney Plus, and rated 97% fresh on the critically acclaimed review platform Rotten Tomatoes, why the low IMDb rating?

Review bombing. That’s when a group of people repeatedly rate a certain series or film to skew the ratings a certain way. This is when users spam the website with one-star reviews for the show in large numbers.

In the case of Ms. Marvel, people repeatedly rated it poorly to suggest people do not want to view diverse content such as that.

The series has a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb for now – the lowest any MCU series has been rated. While all critically acclaimed MCU series including Loki and WandaVision, received an average of 2.5% one-star ratings, Ms. Marvel got bombed with 22.2% one-star ratings in a week.

All the one-star ratings put aside, the series has a 44% of 10/10 star reviews, more than any other Disney series ever had.

According to American commentator, Joe Vargas, the series got a one-star rating within three minutes of its release, suggesting that users did not even watch a complete episode.

Meanwhile, Reddit and Twitter users made racist, Islamophobic, and sexist comments.

On the other hand, people of color are lauding the series for telling the story of a brown Muslim teen from Jersey and giving other South Asian artists a chance to tell their stories. Marvel made a huge step for representation after the franchise has been dominated by white males for a while now.
