American Loses Everything After US Customs Mistake Honey Bottles for Meth

Injustice is not so sweet.

If you are no stranger to Pakistani politics then you must know how a bottle of liquor can ‘magically turn into honey’ (Amin Ali Gandapur anyone?). But in America you might actually go to jail if you are caught possessing a bottle or two of honey. Apparently that did happen to one unfortunate man.

According to a news report, a resident of Maryland United States named Leon Haughton was arrested for the possession of three bottles of honey. He was kept behind the bars for three months after the honey he was carrying tested positive for drugs, specifically crystal meth.

“They said I was charged with methamphetamine, so I said, ‘what is methamphetamine?,” he told a media outlet. Fans of famous American drama series Breaking Bad already know the answer to this. Methamphetamine is a very addictive and dangerous drug.

What Actually Happened

It happened just a few days after Christmas when Leon Haughton arrived in USA from Jamaica. While at the airport, a trained sniffer dog started barking at the luggage Haughton was carrying. The mutt apparently thought that Laughton was carrying meth with himself. He wasn’t.

The bottles of honey Leon Laughton had with him.

He told the police that he had bought the honey from a roadside in Jamaica.

Not convinced by his story, Leon was charged with articles pertaining to the possession of drugs with the intention to sell it. He was jailed for 82 days before a secondary lab test confirmed that he was innocent.

Finally, after conducting the second confirmatory laboratory test he was cleared of all charges since they found no signs of drugs.

Unfortunately, those three months in captivity were enough to ruin Leon’s life.

“Once I came out, all my insurances collapsed, my credit was destroyed. I lost my job, everything. They just left me a mess,” he stated.

Moreover, he said that the customs have sent him a letter offering to return his honey back but he said doesn’t want it.
