Legendary scriptwriter and satirist Anwar Maqsood has answered the ‘most asked question’ in our lives right now – Why are Pakistanis so much in love with Turkish dramas?

In a Q & A session with his son Bilal Maqsood, Anwar Maqsood answered some of the questions from his fans.

When Bilal Maqsood asked him ‘Why do Pakistanis love Turkish dramas?’ the Loose Talk writer gave a very witty answer. He said,

“Bhae wo Turkey hain, hum tharki hain. Ye zara se naam se faida utha rahe hain, is lye peeche pade ja rhe hain.”

[Bhai, they are Turkey and we are tharki (ahem!) They are capitalizing on their name, and that’s why we are not too far behind them.]

Justifying Anwar Maqsood’s Remarks

Anwar Maqsood’s pun on the words ‘Turkey’ and ‘tharki’ really makes us wonder where is the Pakistani entertainment industry going.

We are tired of seeing the same old concepts and themes in Pakistani dramas, especially now that it’s 2020. We really need to move on from the saas-bahu fights, husband/wife’s affairs, strained familial ties, and so on.

Are Pakistani dramas only capable of portraying these things? This is primarily the reason why the audience is more interested in Turkish dramas or any other foreign dramas for that matter. Because Pakistani dramas recycle the same old themes in the name of ‘entertainment’.

Our content is not getting any better and yet, some celebrities complain about viewers watching foreign dramas. Maybe its for the best if these celebs check what content they are providing us. Is the quality of content really that good?

Secondly, even if we are watching foreign dramas, they shouldn’t complain about it. Because, they are still getting paid for their jobs, no matter how bad the content gets. Their fans won’t go anywhere.

So to sum it all up, these shows aren’t the problem. The Pakistani drama industry and its reliance on old techniques of storytelling is the problem. It is time that Pakistani writers, directors and actors get out of their ‘conventional’ mindset.
