Marvel’s latest blockbuster, Captain America: Brave New World, starring Anthony Mackie has finally been unveiled to the press, and the first reactions are as mixed as a bag of nimko.
Some are calling it an “absolute blast,” while others feel it’s “slightly empty.” Let’s dive into the buzz surrounding Anthony Mackie’s debut as the lead in a Marvel movie.
Herb Scribner from the Washington Post couldn’t contain his excitement, taking to social media to declare the film an “absolute blast.” He praised its cohesive storytelling, saying it felt like an MCU movie where other projects actually matter again.
Scribner’s enthusiasm was echoed by entertainment writer Chris Gallardo, who lauded Mackie’s performance, stating, “Anthony Mackie has RIGHTFULLY EARNED the role of Captain America.”
On the flip side, film critic Cris Parker wasn’t as impressed. While he appreciated Mackie’s portrayal and the film’s serious tone, he felt it didn’t quite hit the emotional highs he was hoping for. Emmanuel Noisette shared a similar sentiment, describing the film as “grounded, entertaining, and to the point,” but noted it pulled a lot of political punches.
In Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson, played by Mackie, must put aside his differences with U.S. President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford, to tackle a conspiracy tied to an assassination attempt and the global battle for adamantium.
The film also stars Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon, Giancarlo Esposito as the villain Sidewinder, and Shira Haas as U.S. government agent Sabra.
Jazz Tangcay urged fans to see the film on the biggest screen possible, praising Mackie’s performance and the film’s score. Meanwhile, Marc Malkin expressed his newfound love for the duo of Mackie and Ramirez, joking about needing to work out for a Red Hulk Halloween costume.
However, not all reviews were glowing. John Flickinger found the film “clunky” and “anticlimactic,” criticizing its safe approach as the 35th film in the MCU. Brittany Patrice felt the film didn’t capitalize on its strengths, leaving her underwhelmed.
The film is set to open in theaters on February 14, fans will have the chance to decide for themselves whether Brave New World is a triumphant new chapter or just another entry in the sprawling Marvel saga.
