British Lawmaker Gets Fired Over Racist Tweet to Pakistani-Origin Member

Is this the end?

Conservative Party’s Theodora Dickinson has been suspended for her racist tweet about Labour Member of Parliament (MP) Naz Shah. Theodora Dickinson said Naz Shah ‘should go back to Pakistan‘.

As the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement makes its way to the United Kingdom, many in the country cited stats on how white people are more likely to be targeted by police in the UK. However, incidents like Theodora Dickinson’s tweet have really brought racism against minorities in Britain to the surface.

The backlash caused the Conservative Party activist to delete her tweet. A Tory spokesperson said that she’s being investigated after targeting the shadow minister. The party has even launched an independent inquiry into all forms of prejudice.

Theodora Dickinson even tweeted an apology.

The Muslim Council of Britain described the tweet against British-Pakistani MP Naz Shah as ‘blatant racism’. They brought up how this isn’t the first time Theodora has been accused of Islamophobia. Adding how the Tories consistently failed to take action against racism.

“The Conservative Party’s lack of action for the last 15 months after Ms Dickinson shared an Islamophobic conspiracy theory in response to the Christchurch terrorist attack, shows a serious problem with the Party.

Meanwhile, former Conservative Party MP, and British-Pakistani Sayeeda Warsi opened up about how suspensions like that of Theodora are just a front and such members are ‘very quickly and quietly let back in‘.

Is the Naz Shah case going to solve anything?

Naz Shah says that incidents are bringing up Britain’s love affair with systemic and structural racism.

“Over the last few weeks BAME (Black, Asian, minority, ethnic) communities have been coming to terms with the racism they have faced over the years. In 2020 to be told to go back to Pakistan, highlights the level of racism that still exists in some quarters of society.”

So what do you think? Are things going to be different this time?
