Coke Studio Goes to Court Over ‘Mundeya’

The song is not well received by the court.

Coke Studio is the longest-running annual television music show in Pakistan since 2008. Yet that reign might come to an end with Season 12 continuous run-ins with legal trouble. Now the studio is being dragged to court over the track ‘Mundeya‘.

The concept of the show is to unite veterans of the music industry as well as rising underdogs. Coke Studio gained fame from combining a myriad of musical influences from traditional, classical, folk, Sufi, Qawwali, Ghazal and Bhangra music to contemporary hip hop, rock and pop music.

The studio has produced timeless classics such as Tajdar-E-Haram, Afreen Afreen, Tera Wo Pyar, Sar Kiye Ye Pahar and many more.

Coke Studio Season 12 Creative Drought

Coke Studio is currently on a steamroll with 12th season underway.  Having released instant classics such as Wohi Khuda Hai by Atif Aslam, Dam Mastam by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Rosheby Zeb Bangash, Mubarik Mubarikby Atif Aslam and Banur’s band, Dhola by Sahir Ali Bagga and Aima Baig and many more.

Recently, another one of Season 12 songs was struck down by a copyright violation claim. The song in question is “Mundeya“, sung by Ali Sethi and Qurat-ul-Ain Balouch. The song is a remix and tries to pay respect to its original predecessor, which was featured in the super-popular film Mukhra. The song was sung by Madam Noor Jehan and Nadeem.

The ownership of the song’s censorship certificate originally belonged to Muhammad Sadiq. After his demise, the ownership was passed down to his son Muhammad Saleem, who is now taking Coke Studio to court for copyright violation.

It’s been revealed that Coke Studio did not seek any permission before remixing the song. Hence the studio has been ordered to stop broadcasting the song.

Previous accusations

This isn’t the first time Coke Studio Season 12 has been struck with copyright claims. Other songs such as Billo De Ghar by Abrar ur Haq and Saiyaan by Rachel Viccaji and Shuja Haider were also targeted.

Revered artists such as Atif Aslam, Zoe Viccaji, Momina Mustehsan, Qural-ul-Ain Balouch, Ali Azmat, Sajjad Ali, Strings and Umair Jawal have graced previous seasons of the show with their legendary presence.
