Renowned comedian, playwright, and producer Dawar Mehmood graced the ProPakistani podcast with insights into Pakistan’s creative theater industry and a glimpse into his upcoming venture, a ‘One Man Special’ standup comedy titled ‘No Offence.’
As the CEO of KopyKats production, Dawar is set to deliver his unique brand of comedy to a crowd of 500+ for an impressive 11-day run. Expressing his excitement, Dawar mentioned that performing a one-man show has always been a dream, and he eagerly anticipates the experience.
In the conversation, Dawar shed light on the fact that while theater is widely recognized in Pakistan, standup comedy remains a niche form of entertainment. Hilariously recounting his experiences explaining the concept to people, he revealed that many struggle to grasp the idea of a one-man show, often questioning if it includes song and dance performances.
While standup comedy has gained massive popularity worldwide, its presence is gradually growing in Pakistan.
Dawar Mehmood and KopyKats production have been instrumental in introducing the concept to Pakistani audiences over the past 3-4 years. Dawar began with the legendary Anwar Maqsood, followed by a one-man show featuring the late Zia Mohyeddin and another with veteran actor Sajid Hasan.
Dawar highlighted the success of these shows, particularly Anwar Maqsood’s ‘Faqat Anwar,’ which garnered widespread acclaim. Encouraged by the positive reception, Dawar embarked on directing a standup comedy show with the versatile Bushra Ansari titled ‘Malka-e-Tabassum.’
Regarding his unique style of comedy, Dawar emphasized that it caters to a diverse audience, transcending age groups. He emphasized that he doesn’t resort to profanities or vulgarities to elicit reactions, a principle instilled in him by his mentor Anwar Maqsood.
Dawar Mehmood’s highly anticipated comedy special, ‘No Offence,’ kicked off on December 14 at the Gandhara Citizens Club in Islamabad, promising 11 days of laughter and entertainment for audiences of all ages.
