Did Jehangir Tareen Return to Pakistan After An ‘Understanding?’

The political mover and shaker returns to the country.

One of the country’s biggest industrialists and political mover and shaker, Jehangir Khan Tareen is now back in Pakistan. The businessman left the country for London for a few months after he was listed amongst sugar mills owners allegedly involved in corrupt practices.

After five months in self-exile in London, people are wondering why did the estranged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader returned?

According to The Current, Jehangir Khan Tareen decided to end his self-imposed exile after Imran Khan assured him of a fair trial about the ongoing issues among other things.

The former politician has already been disqualified for life by the courts. He was once a close confidant of Prime Minister Imran Khan, until Tareen was named in an inquiry ordered by the PM over a huge hike in sugar prices.

This led to a falling out between Jehangir Tareen, his party PTI and the PM. The report which was made public by the government had named other politicians as well.

Mr Tareen now says he was away for medical reasons in a statement he made while speaking about his return at the airport.

Jehangir Tareen said he was staying in London for medical reasons, and rejected the inquiry report that named him for manipulating the sugar industry to make profits. He added that he was ready to face all these accusations.

Earlier this year, following the shortage of wheat flour in Pakistan and the consequent price hike, sugar also appeared to fall short in the market. Taking notice of the situation, the PM had formed a committee to find out those responsible for the crises.

The inquiry report on the sugar crisis had named Jehangir Tareen among other people involved. Others named in the inquiry report as beneficiaries of the price hike includes Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Moonis Elahi and a relative of then minister for national food security, Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar.
