In a surprising reveal, Hollywood diva Anne Hathaway shared that she was once in the running to play the iconic role of Barbie way before Margot Robbie.
The Oscar-winning actress disclosed that back in 2017, she was seriously considering donning the blonde wig and pink ensemble for Sony Pictures, with Alethea Jones in talks to direct.
However, in a recent interview, Anne Hathaway expressed gratitude for Margot Robbie doing justice to the role, emphasizing that it’s a “lucky thing” her version of the Barbie movie never materialized.
Anne Hathaway highlighted the immense success and impact of this year’s Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which has become the talk of the town and the biggest blockbuster of 2023.
“The team behind this year’s Barbie hit a bullseye,” Hathaway remarked. “Now imagine that version, that much energy, that much anticipation, that much emotion, but it’s not the right version.”
The Princess Diaries actress went on to shower praise on Margot Robbie, the woman who ultimately took on the role and produced the film. Hathaway described Robbie as “sublime” and expressed her excitement and inspiration for what Robbie is achieving both as a creative force and a producer.
“What she is doing as a creative person and a producer is so exciting and inspiring,” Hathaway said. She commended the film for challenging and surpassing longstanding industry norms and barriers.
Reflecting on her past project, Hathaway acknowledged the significant strides made by Gerwig and Robbie with their Barbie rendition. “If I believed that the version I was attached to could have done that, yeah, I might feel differently about it, but I genuinely think their [film] was the best possible version.”
Anne Hathaway’s admiration for the success of the Barbie movie was evident as she expressed her joy for the groundbreaking achievements of the film.
I’m thrilled by the development. If I believed that the version I was attached to could have done that, yeah, I might feel differently about it, but I genuinely think their [film] was the best possible version. So it’s actually very easy to just be thrilled and happy [for them]. I’m also a person who loves watching women kill it. I just do, I just love it. And also, to do so well, so undeniably that they actually had to write new records, come on! … I think it’s probably going to make things better.
