Exciting news for Disney fans as the next installment of the popular film The Lion King is in the works.

According to reports, the upcoming movie will be directed by Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins, who is excited to work on this project.

Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins has agreed to work on the next chapter in the immensely popular Lion King story. The director of Moonlight will take over from Jon Favreau, whose live-action/photorealistic CGI take of the classic Disney franchise earned him over $1.6 billion globally last year.

According to sources, this upcoming sequel is something of a prequel as the film will delve more into the characters’ origin stories.

Fans loved Favreau’s cast that featured Beyoncé Knowles as Nala, Donald Glover as Simba, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, and James Earl Jones reprising his role from the original Lion King as Mufasa.

People would love to see this star-studded cast in the upcoming sequel/prequel.

Although the film has no release date nor any actors have confirmed to reprise their roles, it is unlikely that some of the big names from Favreau’s cast will not be coming back. Obviously, you cannot make The Lion King without Simba, right?

Jenkins himself is also buzzing with excitement about this opportunity. Here’s what he had to say:

“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters. Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”
