After nearly three decades at the helm of one of the most iconic fashion houses in the world, Donatella Versace is stepping down as the creative director of Versace.

The 69-year-old designer, who took over the brand after the tragic death of her brother Gianni Versace in 1997, will now transition into the role of chief brand ambassador.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity,”

Donatella said in a heartfelt statement. She also expressed excitement about her successor, Dario Vitale, saying, “I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes.”

Dario Vitale, formerly the Design and Image Director at Miu Miu, will take over as Chief Creative Officer on April 1. Known for his work at Miu Miu, an offshoot of Prada, Vitale brings a more refined and understated aesthetic to the table—quite the contrast to Versace’s bold, sexy, and provocative style.

The timing of Donatella’s departure has fueled speculation about a potential sale of Versace to Prada. Reports suggest that Prada is close to finalizing a deal to acquire Versace from Capri Holdings for nearly 1.5 billion euros ($1.6 billion).

Versace has faced challenges in recent years, with revenues dropping 6.6% to $1.03 billion in 2024 and further declines expected in 2025. Analysts like David Swartz from Morningstar believe the brand has struggled to maintain relevance compared to other European luxury labels.

“Bringing in Dario Vitale could be a strategic move tied to the potential sale to Prada,” Swartz noted.

Under Donatella’s leadership, Versace became synonymous with daring designs and celebrity endorsements, cementing its place in pop culture.
