It was a ‘dream come true’ moment for Ayesha Khurram, a Pakistani immigrant student in Canada who found help from the most unlikeliest of people. It was none other than pop culture icon Taylor Swift who decided to help this Pakistani girl achieve her goals.
Ayesha was in deep trouble when the provincial government introduced severe cuts to the Ontario Student Assistance Program earlier this year. Entering the second year of the accounting and financial management program at the University of Waterloo, she didn’t have the money to pay her tuition fee. Her future was in jeopardy.
Being a daughter of low-wage immigrant parents from Pakistan, and that too with a mother who’s struggling from kidney disease, Ayesha couldn’t depend on her family for money.
Social Media to the rescue
Disappointed about her future, the girl vented about it on a social platform.
“When I posted, I was just like venting. It’s hard to pay off tuition. It’s really expensive.”
Upon reading her post, one of Ayesha’s friends suggested to create a Paypal account and share its details so that they could help her.
“One of my friends online was like, ‘You should drop your PayPal so we can help you out,’ and I was like, ‘That’s not a bad idea, I should totally do that.’ And then I did. And the next thing I know, I literally have no more problems anymore.”
Ayesha went on with the idea, and just a couple of hours later, she received an email notifying that Taylor Swift had transferred an amount of $6,386.47 to her account with a short and beautiful note.
“Ayesha, get your learn on, girl!” the message read. “I love you! Taylor.”
As you can imagine, Ayesha couldn’t believe what just happened. She had just finished baking Taylor Swift’s chai cookie recipe, and Taylor had liked her social media post about it.
The news brought tears in her parents’ eyes.
“My parents actually cried when I told them the Taylor Swift news because they couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It’s like a guardian angel is watching or something.”
Ayesha said she was so happy with joy that she could not sleep that night.
