Bird Sheds Its Feathers: Elon Musk is Rebranding Twitter as ‘X’

The bird is all set to shed its feathers.

More changes are coming to Elon Musk’s Twitter, as the billionaire owner of the site announced plans to replace the company’s iconic blue bird logo with the letter “X.” Musk made the shocking announcement of his plans early Sunday. By Monday morning US time, he announced that the URL “X.com” would now automatically redirect users to Twitter.

Taken together, the two changes mark the latest and arguably most dramatic changes for the social platform since the billionaire’s purchase last year. It may signal a new era for the platform which Musk has long envisioned as a super app that will offer a variety of services from online banking to video messaging.

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino wrote on Twitter,

Twitter’s new logo is slated to be sleeker and on par with the futuristic style of Elon Musk’s other business ventures, Tesla and SpaceX.

For years, the billionaire has been known for having an affinity for the letter X. In one of his earliest ventures, Musk called his online bank X.com. That name was later dropped when the platform merged with a competitor to become PayPal. “X” is already the name of Tesla’s third electric car model, which debuted in 2015. Musk’s spaceflight company is called SpaceX. And in 2020, Musk and his then-partner, the Canadian musician Grimes, named their youngest son “X Æ A-12.”

Musk was once best known for his innovative efforts through companies SpaceX and Tesla (TSLA) to launch rockets and build electric cars. Now, many of the headlines he makes are for his eccentric remarks on his personal Twitter account, often sharing conspiracy theories and getting into public spats on the social media platform.
