Female Rapper From Makkah Goes Viral [Video]

Her music video is attracting controversy.

Rap music is often times controversial, since its a form of expression about something that ends up sparking a debate. Recently, a rap music video came out from the most unlikeliest of places, Makkah. And controversy soon followed.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has taken several steps to empower women, including lifting a decades-old ban on female driving, as part of dramatic social changes in the country. However, no one was ready to see a hijab-wearing woman from Makkah releasing a rap video focusing on the women living in the holy city.

This triggered an immediate outcry in the kingdom and has prompted legal steps to be taken by authorities to have the woman arrested. According to foreign media sources, the video has been deemed offensive.

Titled “Bint Makkah” or “A Girl from Makkah”, the video features a hijab-donning female singer inside a coffee shop as she extols the characteristics of the women in the city. Girls and boys are seen dancing in the video.

Although there is nothing vulgar or crass lyrically, detractors have lashed out at the video and the woman in question, saying it does not represent Saudi women. They further contend that it offends the holy city of Makkah, which is home to the most sacred Islamic site. Here is a small portion of the lyrics:

“I’m a well-bred girl from Makkah that deserves hard work. In tough times, she doesn’t back down. She props up the back.”

The Authorities strike back

Prince Khalid Al Faisal has ordered those involved in production of the video to be prosecuted. He says,

“The video offends customs and traditions of the people of Makkah and contradicts their noble identity and traditions.”

Some reports suggest that the singer is not even from Saudi Arabia, but is a resident. While other critics said that she is a Saudi national of African descent, a remark which brought them under fire for being racist.
