Pakistan is witnessing a continuous rise in the figures of coronavirus cases and yet the public is not taking it seriously.
From citizens flocking to markets, to shops operating without SOPs and people traveling in public transports without masks, is the country really making a progress against the novel coronavirus?
We don’t think that’s the case. At this point, we need more platforms and public service initiatives to raise awareness among the people.
For this specific reason, the Government of Punjab recently organized a meeting with social media influencers to ensure that the important information becomes easily accessible to all.
The Governor Punjab and his wife invited top Pakistani TikTokers to tackle the misinformation regarding coronavirus.
The TikTokers were instructed to create awareness about the virus and its leading threats through this platform. Kanwal Aftab, Haris Ali, Zulqarnain Sikandar, Sehar Hayyat and many other TikTok stars were seen sharing their concerns and how they can promote the need of implementing proper measures through the social media platform.

With this development, naturally people had a lot of mixed reactions about it.
Some of them are of the view that TikTokers should not be a part of this initiative. ‘Now Tiktokers will educate us about corona’ was the typical response from most of them.
What is happening?? Is this true? We’re relying on Tik tokkers now to educate us?

On the other hand, some think that this is a great idea since they have a huge fan following and they can easily deliver an important message to millions.

TikTok has the highest engagement rate
Going by the available data, how many active Pakistani users are on TikTok?
Mashwani Azhar, Focal Person (Digital Media) to CM Punjab, breaks it down for all the naysayers
Active users on:
- Twitter: 328 Million
- TikTok: 800 Million

This explains how much influence they have over their followers. And as long as the message is reaching out to the masses, we shouldn’t worry about how or from whom it is being delivered.
Because at the end, what matters is that people wake up from their ‘corona has nothing to do with me’ dream and start facing reality.
The Government of Punjab took a really great step to encourage young TikTok stars in spreading awareness. Hopefully, this will promote the implementation of safety protocols and SOPs.
