Govt Ministers Are Making A Habit of Shutting Down Airports Every Time Imran Khan Comes Back

We think there’s nothing ‘naya’ about this.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has won hearts and minds by his rather impassioned, and straight-from-the-heart speech for Kashmir at the UN Headquarters in New York last week. A lot has been said about how articulate and clear his messaging was about the plight of Kashmir, and how he has put the international community on notice to act before a massacre happens in the region.

Over at home, the general feeling is that his efforts has given Pakistan a rare boost of respectability in world affairs among the comity of nations. India has suffered a rare diplomatic defeat, and understandably, many Pakistanis are proud of turning the tables on their warmongering neighbor for once, whose diplomatic and economic clout dwarfs Pakistan’s many times over.

Imran Khan’s gift of the gab notwithstanding, there is also a sense that his party workers and government functionaries are setting a wrong precedent in this ‘Naya Pakistan’ that PTI says will not follow the politics of cult worship. Unfortunately, this is happening again and again, and people are not ok with it.

This sort of thing is not ok, and its time Imran Khan and his government realizes it:

Here is a member of IK’s cabinet tweeting the scenes himself:

There were some ecstatic Imran Khan supporters too

Obviously, some moments are too historic and people want to be a part of them. You really can’t fault them for being overenthusiastic.

Its not the first time this has happened. Following IK’s first meeting with US President Donald Trump a few months ago, this is the second such occurrence of its kind.

This is not to say other political parties have not behaved in a similar manner themselves. This argument applies as much to the opposition parties as it does to the current ruling dispensation.

Given the PTI government’s disdain for VIP-style treatments and a commitment to not do things the previous administrations did, things that caused inconvenience (even some lost lives) to the everyday citizen, we think its fair to say that this trend of meeting IK at the airport like a pair of sycophants is ill-advised at best.

Hope people do see what’s right and what isn’t.
