Here’s Why This British Teacher Who Learnt Sindhi Doesn’t Want to Leave Pakistan [Video]

A remarkably lovely story.

Stephen David Sheen

Stephen David Sheen, more popularly known as Steve among his students in Sindh, is a UK native who now serves as a school Principal in Khairpur. Although Pakistan was only supposed to be a temporary destination on his way to India (where his cousins live), Steve has been living in Pakistan for the past decade.

So what happened? Why did he fall in love with Pakistan? Let’s find out, shall we?

‘Angrez Ka School’

In 2010, Steve made a plan for a train trip to Europe and then to India. He first visited Turkey from where he took a train to Iran and finally to Pakistan. He stayed in Quetta for the initial time period before going to Karachi, and from there to Khairpur.

It was more of a necessity to cross through Pakistan to reach India. Pakistan would rather be a very quick cross-through.

Steve now speaks fluent Sindhi and teaches Mathematics, Physics, and English to the students of Sojhro Faiz High School. The school is now famously known as the ‘Angrez ka school’ among the locals in Khairpur, Sindh.

He had volunteered to teach at the school for one summer camp but decided to stay and teach its students on a permanent basis.

A Sindhi by heart

Steve mentioned that everywhere around the globe, people make money off tourism, but in Pakistan, the hospitality of the people doesn’t allow for such businesses to boom. Here, people present him with free food, accommodation, and travel.

Whenever I go to a town or a village, the people there greet me and respond so well that I can’t tell.

On learning Sindhi, Steve mentioned that in 2010 when he first arrived in Khairpur, he was invited to an Eid dinner. Everyone at the dinner party was talking to each other in Sindhi, and he felt alienated. From that point onward, he made the decision of learning the language and he now speaks it fluently.

Let’s take a look at his Interview with Independent Urdu:

Other than teaching and running a school, Stephen David Sheen also enjoys woodwork. He makes wooden tables and chairs, and some of his students also join him in this activity from time to time.
