Sunny Nahal’s music video for Brham Darya’s ‘Mood Happy’ looks oddly familiar. The reason is that it’s a blatant plagiarism of Nabeel Qureshi’s music video for Shani Arshad’s ‘Ki Jana’.
Nabeel Qureshi created the music video for Shani Arshad’s ‘Ki Jana’ back in July 2020. By November 2020, the video had won the award for Best Music Video at the Miami Short Film Festival 2020.
While great things do offer inspo, copying a concept down to a T is plagiarism and disrespectful.
Shani Arshad’s ‘Ki Jana’ cast Sonya Hussyn and Mohsin Abbas Haider. Everything about Sunny Nahal’s music video from the wardrobes to the set, the two music videos look exactly like a scene out of Ki Jana.
Sunny Nahal replicated Nabeel Qureshi’s direction down to every detail.
Mood Happy‘s opening scene is an intimate moment between the actors seated in a car. Just like Nabeel Qureshi’s video. Both videos are filmed in a desert. In both music videos the male leads are shot dead, leading to the female protagonist evading a group of men hunting her.
Both Sonya Hussyn and Khushi Punjaban, the female leads wear red and gold lehengas, jhumkay, and big nose rings. Even the placement of the bruises on the top left side of their faces is the same.
Similarly, both music videos conclude with a scene set against the same mountainous background, with the female leads standing against their cars pointing guns at a man dressed in white kurta shalwar and pagri (turbon). Meanwhile, another man lays dead on the ground.
Nabeel Qureshi has called out Sunny Nahal and his team for creating a knock-off of his music video. The Indian artist is yet to respond.
