Karachi Police have arrested wealthy businessman Salman Farooqi after a video of him assaulting a motorcyclist in the Defence area went viral on social media. The incident, which occurred last night following a minor traffic collision, has sparked widespread outrage.
According to police officials, Farooqi was located and apprehended in Defence using his phone’s location. He was taken into custody near Khayaban-e-Zulfiqar and transferred to the police station for further investigation. The luxury car involved in the incident was recovered from a friend’s residence in Defence, based on information provided by Farooqi.
A formal case has been registered at Gizri police station, naming Salman Farooqi, his armed security guard, and unidentified individuals. The charges include assault, criminal intimidation, abduction, unlawful confinement, use of abusive language, and mistreatment of the victim. Police have also detained Farooqi’s guard and another individual during the investigation.
Eyewitness Muhammad Saleem, a sales manager at a mobile company, reported that the incident took place around 8:15pm at Ittihad Commercial. He stated that after a minor accident, Farooqi physically assaulted the motorcyclist and, with the help of his guard, forcibly confined him in the car at gunpoint. Saleem added that Farooqi abused and threatened the victim, while women accompanying the motorcyclist pleaded for mercy but were also threatened and pushed.
Videos of the incident, recorded by bystanders, have circulated widely online. Farooqi’s family has since issued public pleas for forgiveness, but the investigation remains ongoing, with further arrests and evidence collection expected.
