Karachi Literature Festival Kicks Off Today and It’s a Must Attend Event!

This year will also see a mix of foreign dignitaries

The Karachi Literature Festival (KLF) starts on March 1st and literature enthusiasts are in for a treat. This time around the festival theme is the future.

The 10th Edition of Karachi Literature Festival is a three-day event being held at the Beach Luxury Hotel.

The festival theme this year is ‘focus for tomorrow’.

235 speakers will be taking up the subject at KLF. The speakers are a mixed bunch of 220 locals and 15 overseas residents.

This was to bring foreign insight to the festival.

“The 10th KLF will feature literary works and poetry, the fine arts, culture, and the performance arts. We aim to bring together not only the stalwarts of Pakistan’s literary world and academia but also some of the most creative minds beyond Pakistan’s border.”

Over the course of three days, attendees will be a part of 80 sessions. The most exciting part is the book launches. This year, 20 books will be launched at KLF.

Maybe that isn’t even the best part. This is a free entry event, so for the love of literature head on out there!

Managing Director, Oxford University Press (OUP), Arshad Saeed Husain, gave away these details at a press conference at Karachi Art Council.

Here is what to expect on the three days of festivities;

Day 1

KLF will kick off with Governor Sindh Imran Ismail at the inauguration ceremony. He will hand out the Urdu Literature Prize for 2019. This will be followed by a KLF recollection documentary and a performance by Sheeema Kirmani.

“KLF is the mother of all literature festivals as it has inspired literary activities to flourish celebrating the written word in different cities across Pakistan. Through discourse and discussions, the festival celebrates cultural and linguistic diversity. KLF is not just a festival but a social movement inspiring our youth and the literati to embrace it and spread this light further.”

A performance by the Thespianz Theatre will wind up the day.

Day 2

The second day will be all about books. This day has several book launches lined up. Discussion sessions will also make up the bulk of day 2.

The late Madiha Aijaz’s film will premiere at the festival. City By The Sea: The Future Of Karachi’s Coastline will also be screened.

Qawwali Night by Hamza Akram and Brothers will pack it up for the day.

Day 3

Day three has book launches lined up as well. They’ll be followed up by dramatic readings and closing speeches by some notable writers. The award-winning movie Rani, will premier at KLF.

Rani is the story of a Pakistani transgender woman who adopts an abandoned baby.

Pepsi Battle of Bands will close it up for the day.

Since the theme is ‘for the future’, it’s fitting that KLF is promoting local talent, especially performers.

Furthermore, KLF 2019 will feature fine arts, culture, film, and performing arts.
