NBA superstar LeBron James, a towering name in basketball, has scored another first: he’s now the inaugural male athlete to be immortalized as a Ken doll. Mattel unveiled the new Barbie figure today, celebrating the Los Angeles Lakers star’s influence beyond the court.

Krista Berger, Mattel’s senior vice president of Barbie, said the doll honors “LeBron as a role model,” highlighting his ability to “transcend culture” and inspire youth.

Unlike typical Ken dolls, this one stands an inch taller, mirroring James’ 6’9” frame. It skips the basketball uniform, opting for his pre-game style—a varsity jacket with “LJ” on the front, an Ohio patch and crown on one sleeve, and his jersey number 23 on the other. “LeBron” and “Just a kid from Akron” adorn the back, nodding to his Ohio roots.

Beneath, a “We Are Family” shirt reflects his foundation’s ethos. Accessories include a basketball, headphones, and sneakers.

In a Mattel promo video, the Space Jam 2 star saw the doll for the first time, exclaiming, “Oh, he dope! That’s so cool!” While inspecting it, he quipped, “Might have to do a little lifting, legs are looking skinny.”

The release marks a milestone for the 65-year-old Barbie brand, which has recently diversified its lineup with athletes like Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka—all women until now. James is the first male sports figure and non-entertainment male to join.

With four NBA titles, two Olympic golds, and the all-time scoring record, James called his “Kenbassador” role unique. “It’s about more than basketball,” he said, emphasizing its power to “instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids they can achieve greatness.” The doll hits shelves this month.
