Legendary Poet Amjad Islam Amjad Passes Away

Pakistanis pay their respects to the renowned playwright.

Renowned poet, playwright, and columnist Amjad Islam Amjad has passed away. According to reports, the 79-year-old literary legend suffered a heart attack earlier today.

Pakistanis nationwide as well as several respected journalists and media personalities mourned the death of Amjad Islam Amjad on social media.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) paid their respects to the legendary poet on Twitter. PML-N’s official account tweeted,

Today, the nation mourns the passing of Amjad Islam Amjad, a master of words and a true inspiration. His writings will continue to touch hearts and his legacy will be forever remembered. RIP Amjad Sahib, you will be missed.

Even Pakistani President Dr. Arif Alvi tweeted about him, calling Amjad Pakistan’s “great playwriter, dramatist, and poet”. He also shared one of Amjad Islam’s famous poetry as well.

TV host and journalist Dr. Nauman Niaz stated that he was “one of the finest playwrights, a poet of the highest pedigree, an ex-university cricketer, and a remarkable human being”. He went on to recall his time working with him on several shows in 1995-96.

Amjad Islam Amjad was a famous Urdu poet, drama writer, and lyricist. He was the author of more than 40 books in a career that spanned over 50 years. Amjad has received many accolades for his literary work and TV screenplays.

Amjad Islam Amjad gained nationwide fame with the drama serial Waris. He was the creator of several poetry collections and was awarded the Pride of Performance and Sitarae-Imtiaz.
