Geo TV’s popular drama Mann Mast Malang is facing backlash yet again, this time for showing a female character smoking on screen. So far, 50 episodes have aired, and the story is becoming more controversial with each episode.
In a recent episode, Mobeen, Kabir’s older brother, decides to remarry in order to have a child. His wife, who is shown struggling with depression, is seen smoking. This scene has upset many viewers who feel smoking should not be shown on national TV.
On social media, fans expressed their anger. One wrote, “Why show the bhabhi smoking? What message are you sending to society?” Another said,
“Smoking in Pakistani dramas is not acceptable.” Some blamed the writer, Nooran Makhdoom, saying she is adding negative elements to the story, similar to her previous drama Tere Bin. Others criticized the realistic way the actress smoked, saying it promotes a bad example, especially involving women.
Many viewers believe that simply displaying a “Smoking Kills” warning is insufficient. They want dramas to promote positive messages and Islamic values instead.
Mann Mast Malang is one of Geo TV’s most-watched dramas, with over 600 million views on YouTube. It is popular not only in Pakistan but also in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and other countries. The story, written by Nooran Makhdoom and directed by Ali Faizan, follows the complicated relationship between Riya Khan and Kabir Khan, former family friends turned enemies.
