Meera Jee Confirms Meena Kumari’s Role for Pakistani Remake of Pakeeza

According to the private news channel Samaa TV, Lollywood veteran actress Meera Jee is going to star as Meena Kumari in the remake of the 70s’ cult classic film, Pakeezah. Previously, Mahira Khan was rumored to be starring in this role which was later rejected by the actress’s management.

According to the reports, Meera Jee has confirmed the news. She said,

I am going to play Pakeezah, 100%.

She further shared that they had been working on this project for the last 13 years and the shooting will start next month. In 2013, she announced being the part of film and today confirmed to the news channel that the project is still under process.

On a question regarding the production and cast of the movie, Meera replied that the movie is produced by a US-based production house namely Red Lipstick, and casting is still under process.

Pakeezah is one of the most popular projects which took 14 years of dedication. It was considered one of the most expensive films to have been made in the 70s. The project was made on a budget of INR 15 million and was released on 4 February 1972.

Nevertheless, it was the highest-grossing Indian film of the year, collecting INR 60 million after a theatrical run of over 50 weeks. Trade analysts said its popularity might have been caused by Kumari’s death a month after its release.
