Growing up there weren’t a lot of role models on screen for brown girls, but comic series Ms. Marvel changed that. Now that diversity and inclusivity are catching on in Hollywood, the comic book series is being adapted into a live-action series for digital streaming platform Disney+.

Funny thing is 18-year-old Iman Vellani is a Pakistani-Canadian. When news first emerged there was so much discussion surrounding who would play Kamala Khan, and now we have Iman Vellani.

Deadline reported that the young actress will play the Pakistani-American superhero, born in an immigrant family, raised in Jersey, and a total ‘Captain Marvel‘ fangirl.

Meanwhile, Pakistani-American writer, Bisha K. Ali is writing the show, and Pakistani director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is directing the series. Other directors include  Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, and Meera Menon.

Kamala Khan is already a central character in the Avengers video game for PlayStation and Marvel Studios. Can’t wait to see the series on Disney Plus and then see her play a role in the movies.

Who Is Iman Vellani?

Turns out this unknown actress already has a history with film. She was even a Toronto International Film Festival, Next Wave Committee member last.

The New Wave program had young people write about the movies at TIFF. So she’s not new to movies. Marvel reportedly went through a long casting process before finding Iman.
