Hollywood diva Sydney Sweeney is teaming up with director Michael Bay for a live-action adaptation of the iconic ‘Outrun’ video game.

Hollywood is revving up for another blockbuster video game adaptation, and this time, Universal Studios is hitting the gas with a star-powered take on Sega’s iconic arcade classic, OutRun.

With A Minecraft Movie dominating the box office and HBO’s The Last of Us making waves, Universal is tapping into the gaming craze by bringing the high-speed thrills of OutRun to the big screen.

The project, still in development, boasts an all-star team. Bay, known for his explosive blockbusters like Transformers and Bad Boys, will produce alongside his Platinum Dunes partner Brad Fuller.

Jayson Rothwell (Polar, Arachnid) is penning the script, while Sega’s Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles) and Shuji Utsumi, Sega’s president and COO, are also producing and overseeing the project.

Sydney Sweeney, though currently attached only as a producer, brings her growing industry clout to the table, fresh off her producing and starring roles in the horror hit Immaculate and the upcoming Christy Martin biopic.

For those unfamiliar, OutRun isn’t just a game—it’s a cultural phenomenon. Launched in the 1980s, Sega’s arcade masterpiece revolutionized driving games with its sleek visuals, innovative gameplay, and a signature electronic music subgenre that still inspires artists today.

The franchise’s open-road vibes and retro cool factor made it a global sensation, spawning countless sequels and home console versions. While plot details for the movie remain under wraps, fans are buzzing about how Bay’s larger-than-life style will translate the game’s high-octane energy to the silver screen.

Universal is no stranger to turning video games into box office gold. Following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.4 billion worldwide) and Five Nights at Freddy’s ($290 million), OutRun is poised to be the studio’s next big win in the gaming-to-cinema pipeline. With video game adaptations hotter than ever, the timing couldn’t be better for this retro-inspired thrill ride.

Sweeney, one of Hollywood’s busiest talents, is proving she’s more than just a star in front of the camera. Her producing credits are stacking up, and her involvement in OutRun signals her knack for picking projects with mass appeal.

Meanwhile, Bay and Platinum Dunes are riding high after producing A Quiet Place: Day One and the Blumhouse thriller Drop, ensuring OutRun will have the high-energy polish fans expect.
