Ms Marvel Comic Pays Tribute to Amir Khusro’s Poetry and People Are Losing Their Minds

This is a pretty sweet way to honor Pakistani culture.

Ms Marvel

Fan site MCU Founder’s Jeremy Conrad recently let it slip that Marvel has found their ‘Kamala Khan’ AKA Ms. Marvel for their TV show. Most of us Ms Marvel fans couldn’t help but went back to reviewing the comics and refreshing all the details after hearing this good news.

After all, we’ve got to higher our expectations after a phenomenal decade of Marvel films and MCU. (or maybe that’s just me).

Regardless, one Twitter user ‘White Mughals’ really just did raise expectations by pointing out how the comics even quoted Amir Khusro’s poem on Basant.

For those who are unaware, Amir Khusro is a famed Sufi poet from pre-partition Indian sub-continent. Having his verse quoted in her comic book is quite a nice touch for fans.

Here’s the verse that ended up in her book:

Sakal bun phool rahi sarson, shakal bun phool rahi … Umbva putay, tesu phulay, Koyal bolay daar daar, Aur gori karat singaarn, (Mustard blooms, mustard blooms …. Mango buds bloom, buds bloom, Koel sings (Asian Koel a type of Cuckoo bird), and the fair/white maiden dolls up)”

People are sharing excitement about Basant and a bit of history.

Except some of us don’t remember this happening.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, this scene was not in the original series by G. Willow Wilson and Sana Amanat. This scene was added by the current writer Saladin Ahmed.

The writer really grasped the dynamics of how Kamala really is just a multi-cultural teenager.

We can safely say Saladin Ahmed’s interpretation of the beloved character is welcome.
